These films where shot with the 7D BNC-R, Super baltar lenses and a diopter. The films are part of a web campain for the swedish luxury watch company, Sandströms. The depth of field and the crisp look is a great reference for 7D BNC-R Macro work. There are some moare issues but not mor than what could come out of a regular film telecine process. So all in all, this shows that the camera and those lenses work great for table top shoots.

I want to see the uncompressed stuff...
Anonymous  2009-10-08 01:55
How do we purchase?
Anonymous  2009-10-08 11:25
What kind of mattebox is that?
Syndicate  2009-10-09 09:47
To purchase just give us a call and we'll go from there. Phone number is at the bottom of the page.
Anonymous  2009-10-12 18:31
It's an ARRI light weight mattebox... Even though it's made out of carbon fiber and aluminium it is a bit interesting that it cost more than the actuall camera itself...

copy paste the link into your browser:

arri.de/camera/professional_camera_accessories/lightweight_matte_boxes/lightweight_matte_box_lmb_15.html

Since this page does not let you type links I can not write the magic 3 w's after each other.

Today we captured uncompressed 1620x910 4:2:2. Did not manage to put the files on the page so far but the concept is working and we are able to do it in 24p, 25p,30p, and 50p,60p at lover resoluton. Next week is the first sharp production shoot. We look forward to post the results right here.

Now the files are there...

I really like the BNC-R adapter mount conversion. I've got a couple sets of Baltars and a set of BNC-R/Panavision Anamorphics. I know I would need a rod system to support the camera to the lens for my heavy glass. But, what are the weight limitations of this mount on this 7D? How long will it take to turn an order or two around for delivery?

Impressive captures, but why are you capturing 1620x910? Is this a by-product of the de-interlacing? The Coke bottle shot has got me worried about image distortion within the frame during a pan tilt. Could it have been introduced in the 60i to 24P/25P conversion in post? I saw that problem on the Nikon D70 off it's sensor. It would be great to see this warpage issue tested out. I need to get my hands on a camera even better with this mount.

Awesome start to an interesting solution. Please post more. Thanks, adkins.dop@mac.com
Syndicate  2009-10-20 16:38
The 1620x910 resolution is not due to a deinterlace or such, it is Canons HDMI output that puts both a pillar box and gray letterbox around the image before the 1920x1080 60i HDMI output. When a new firmware is released the gray letterbox will be possible to clear and the accessible frame will then be 1620x1080. But for now we have a 16:9 frame at 1620x910. The HDMI output is always set to 60i on current firmware no mather what framerate is set on the camera. We developed a software that analyse the source footage and recovers the correct frames out of the 60i HDMI stream. The software analyze the clips, sorts out the correct frames, crops of the letter and pillar box and reconstruct the images to 4:4:4 from the 4:2:2 source. This work flow have given us the cleanest source so far.
Peter  2009-10-22 13:41
Får man leva med den röda rec punkten i bild? För det är väl HDMI tappen som spelas in?
Eric Adkins  2009-10-23 07:14
Wow... You are into alchemy. Thanks for the response. Letterbox be damned, give us 1080. I can crop it later if I want to but whatever full frame exists is best... Crop options are best left for post. And a 4:4:4 color space?

1620x1080 would be fine by me with my anamorphics at a 3:1 ratio instead of 3.5:1... Less waste to get to 2.40:1. 1080 is the key because scaling creates more havoc than cropping. When do they predict a new firmware...? Just like the 5D getting 24p in a few months with firmware. This is all really good to know, I feel very optimistic about what you are doing.

I saw some 7D capture on the CF card with Canons' compression and I felt the diagonals were a bit aliasing in Times Square, but I don't see that here... Is that your conclusion too? I would love to see a grid test shot with a pan and tilt to rule out distortion and a resolution chart shot diagonally to check out what I see as an issue or at what stage things are introduced or eliminated. Just an idea from the other side of the Atlantic.

How did the sharp production shoot go?

The sharp production went more then well. It will be posted here monday the 2nd of nov.

Is the HDMI stream really 60i? Isn't it the same frame rate and resolution as the one used for recording?
Syndicate  2009-11-04 02:01
We wish the HDMI stream was as the framerate recorded. But according to what we recive it's not the case. We get the recorded framerate packed into a 60i container from the camera, then we unstuff the correct source out of the 60i stream. A quite odd process since there is no repeating pattern, the solution is a script that analyze each frame and extract what is needed to recreate the clean source out of duplicated frames and frame material spread out over field 2 on one frame and field 1 on the following and so on. If somebody have a solution to make the camera output HDMI at recorded frame rate that would be a huge helper. It might be somthing that the magic lantern people can sort out. But so far we have this work around solution with 60i coming from the camera. We do not loose any data but we need to render our clips trough our script before we can use it.
J. odoms  2009-11-08 06:56
1. Are you guys using the Matrox MXO2 mini to capture the uncompressed footage via HDMI into a MacBook Pro, or MacPro or some other HDMI capture method/process. I'm extremely interested in this process, because the resolution you get from not compressing with the .H264 codec is awesome.

2. What are usually the render times for an average clip when using your script?

3. Also would it be at all possible to get a download of that script so we can possibly make other tests with our 7D's.

4. And would it be to much for you guys to possibly do a tutorial on this workflow. If we could get our 7D's to put out images like this, we could get alot more from our cams than we are currently. As we say More BANG for your BUCK $$$
Syndicate, Björn  2009-11-09 06:19
We will have the script for 4:2:2 on this page shortly. Fredrik will upload a demo version soon with a tutorial. even though it's a no brainer to run it. You need a matrox hdmi box, there are the MXO2 mini and then there are some other boxes that works aswell. We capture on a mac and run the scrip on a pc, fredrik will probably make the script so it runs on mac aswell. but we hope the strange framerate output can be sorted with the magic lantern for 7D then all you need is the matrox box.

Hey Sydicate, loving your work. It's great to see a facility/production company doing such noble work with these new tools we have to play with (5d,7d). I've worked for over 10 years in post in Glasgow and I'm shifting over to produce my own stuff now with these new cameras. Just thought I would drop you a line and say excellent work. I've also been capturing the live feed from the 7d via hdmi as a test the footage looks great. Looking forward to you posting the script to untangle.

Many Thanks

Mark

Hi mark now the untagle pc script is available in our paypal shop where you also will find a demo version.
resetfilms  2009-11-14 00:57
Thanks for posting that so quickly Bjorn.
Do you have an estimate for the Mac Osx release and if bought now would the PC license carry over later for a possible future release. The only other question I have is for offline would you post using the native framerate to maintain picture lock when replacing the original files with the newly converted files. Or will the material need eye matched.

Thanks again.

Mark
Fredrik, Syndicate  2009-11-14 01:26
Mark, the Mac version will probably be a while, or I might be able to port it over before our next shoot, where I'll be away for some time. We'll post any news on this site though (hey, we want it too!).

In any case, the license will be transferable to Mac, and will work with future versions aswell, up to a point. There is also the possibility that once that version is up and running all future updates will go in there only, due to the (probably) higher demand for that platform. But for this version, depending on needs and sales, will most likely contain conversion based on an EDL instead of whole files, automatic sync and removal of the red dot, given the right h.264 file, and possibly automatic selection of that file. Also, some kind of UI, other than the command-line tool will probably happen.

Hey, I am blown away by the uncompressed images you are getting out of the 7D. The new 1D Mark IV came out with some amazing low-light capabilities. I was wondering if

A.) Will this software work on this new camera? (I am trying to find out if the HDMI out on the 1D Mark IV is the same as the 7D).

B.) Are you going to test with the 1D mark IV to see if it works?
Anonymous  2009-12-01 01:59
Whats you software do that you cant do in 5 mins in afterfx? The 7D 60i stream is simply a random start 3:2 pulldown stream - the crop marks an be cropped out with a nice Lanczos enlargment and the chroma slighly blurred to get a nice smooth conversion to 4:4:4 via cineform/whatever codec.
MarkPatten  2009-12-02 19:41
Gentlemen about to start some plate work on the 7D, would the only recommend to shoot on this format for plate work be via 60i HDMI capture via a matrox mini. Any response would be much appreciated.

Mark Patten UK based DP
Björn Syndicate.  2009-12-05 18:42
Well if aftereffects can solve the 25fps bundeled in 29.97 fps and get out the clean 25 fps than you have a much better version of after effects than we have. for 24p you can do a successfull 3:2 pulldown. We do not blur the croma we use better interpolation to uppress the half horiziontal resolution. also within a few days the program will o this on mac capture in real time.
charles  2009-12-06 04:02
can this be done to a 5d mark2?
Anonymous  2009-12-10 18:35
Yes Charles,

It will work with 5D and magic lantern that gives you full 1920 HDMI from the 5D.

Cameras are looking great guys, I'm sure they will go like hotcakes. Just out of interest how does the 7d output 720 60fps thru the hdmi port. Is the clip still 1080i. Cheers mark.

Just upgraded from PC to mac for my Syndicate HDMI Mac Capture, it rocks! This is the video asist / DIT program from hell. Totaly automatic, records onto the mac when the camera is in record. No need for the FAD to scream video, camera, action, from now on it's only camera and action. and then the stream is captured straight down to the directors laptop in any wanted quicktime format including prores HQ that is usable for online / VFX work.

This program could be driven by a child or actually totaly by it self and it is better than any raptor och other Video assist capture out there.

THX very much, Looking forward to see what could be improved in the next release. I have to figure out something to ask for. :)

The first sterioscopic Syndicate rig, DUO7D3D.

A ready to rumble solution for 3D cinematic imagery The dual 7D head is now calibrated and delivers footage that is very keen on the eyes. Again the small sized cameras and the low noise / high ISO is a solution ideal for Stereoscopic films. This is the first out of two 3D rigs syndicate will start to produce. It covers the above 120 mm in between eyes distance. Then next step is a mirror solution covering 0-120 mm eye distance. The clips bellow are all post rendered to be viewed with the old school cyan/red kind of 3D glasses. The two streams can off-course be rendered in any shape for any kind of dual projection i.e polarized or one screen per eye etc.

Now it's late and wee need to sleep, we thought we would manage to upload some quicktimes here today but it has to wait until tomorrow. Not enough light and sleep is needed. So for now those two pictures will be all. We think it's the first 7D-3D solution on the web at least we been searching and have not seen anything like it.

David Kvart from Hobby Factory rents the Syndicate 7D BNR-R Cine HD system with the Matrox HDMI recorder and shoots green screen with DOP Martin Grafström. The production was later posted at Syndicate. The green screen was lit with simple lighting and the extreme low noise level in the images from the uncompressed matrox footage from the 7D sensor provides a key channel that beats competitors like RED or celluloid footage by far. This proves the theory that the HDMI 7D reconstructed source is optimal for chroma key shooting. It provides a far better picture source at a fraction of the cost of any other camera at this date.
